The City Stories Project

September 2002 News

Derek-SF says: Profiled in Shift 24 Sep 02 // 10:09AM

I talk a bit about the history of, and the impetus for, the City Stories Project in this Shift interview. Sorry I didn't get a chance to name all the wonderful CS sites!

Steve-Portland says: Portland's People 21 Sep 02 // 10:10AM

"The first time I met Birdman, he was walking down Burnside, near Powell's, with an enormous Trailblazers jacket, a face not dissimilar to Hulk Hogan's, and a wildness about him that made people step out of his way. "

Time Anew, a new story by Stephen Voss.

Martijn-Utrecht says: On the bus 20 Sep 02 // 1:03PM

A mother and her daughter are travelling by bus. The mother sees her daughter's ex-boyfriend. But he doesn't want to be seen. A new story at Utrecht Stories, in Dutch.

Tom-Dublin says: Dublin on 9/11/01 11 Sep 02 // 6:18PM

The events of one year ago sent shock waves around the world. We lost some of our own in New York that day. Other Dubliners who have emigrated to New York found themselves part of the rescue teams.

Brendan Dolby writes about his experience of the 11th of September 2001 in Nine-Eleven, Dublin.

Dubliners are no strangers to terrorism. Amongst other attacks, the city had its own version of 9/11 on a small scale in 1974, when some terrorists planted car bombs in the city centre. Thomas Sheridan tells of his experience of the 1974 Dublin Bombings in After School Education.

Maud-Miami says: Hellfire 11 Sep 02 // 4:58PM

In a MiamiStories Special Feature, Stickers, Pop, Postage, Hellfire, writer Bill Teck riffs on September 11 and its aftermath, when our overgrown Pop World was rendered meaningless by real life and death.

Chris-Denver says: In Memory 11 Sep 02 // 8:48AM

Every city in America has its own stories about the events of September 11th, 2001. In memory of those who were less fortunate on that day, we share some thoughts from Denver. "There Were Four" by April J. Chase sheds light on a mother's fears as the day's events passed. "September 10th" seemed like eons away at the time, when it was only yesterday.

Salvatore-SanDiego says: A Year Ago Today 11 Sep 02 // 1:23AM

I was overseas in France when it happened. That day, I learned the meaning of the word papillon.

"I sat once as a child in a field of whispering wheat swaying. This,
among so many countless, was such a moment. It captured for me the
essence of life." pause, by Cyndi Arnette.

Paul-Chicago says: Feeling the Pinch 9 Sep 02 // 5:09AM

"They were everywhere. Newly emerged from the great state universities of the Midwest, they arrived in mighty droves to descend upon their migratory home of East Lakeview. With the ease and grace of nobility, they roamed the streets, flitting in and out of Borders, Icebox, Chipotle, their newly-tanned limbs moving languidly in the shimmering heat, like the drying wings of butterflies."

A brand new tale at Chicago Stories: "The Pinch".

Derek-SF says: SF Stories, the book! 6 Sep 02 // 8:47PM

To commemorate the fourth birthday of SF Stories, the kind folks at So New Media (a punk lit book company that "puts the best web writers on paper"), have compiled the best of SF Stories into a book, which is now for sale. It even includes a story that was never on the website. So I hope you'll consider picking up a copy. Makes a great gift!

Tom-Dublin says: Late Stop 1 Sep 02 // 3:58PM

"I guessed that they wanted the paper to roll a certain other form of weed. As it turned out, I had guessed correctly."

On the way home from Dublin city centre a couple of weeks ago, I made a late stop in the small hours of morning at a petrol station to buy some smokes. Check out my latest story!
