March 2002 News

Steve-Portland says: Portland Stories continues to grow 26 Mar 02 // 7:23PM

We're lucky to have two new stories up at Portland Stories.

First, Last Days is a tale of the web and unemployment. And, from our own Charlene Kannankeril, we have Pizza in the Pearl, a story about a generous man and the best damn pizza in Portland.

gat says: Casale Monferrato stories update! 26 Mar 02 // 3:00PM

first "your" story in casalestories! i'm really glad about that, that's the first story i had in few days the site is open, and from a guy i don't know! the story (for non italian speaking people) talks about how my city is often considered as "sh*t", and is told by a guy which went to Milan (north italy) years and years ago.. then he comes back, and asks himself why.. he loves his city, his city is cool. in this story you can see Casale with the eyes of a kinda foreign guy. that's how he discovers his city, as it was the first time.

says: Miami Stories: Two-Week Update 25 Mar 02 // 4:04PM

"As the sun was beginning to set, a large, white Cadillac pulled into the driveway and a wisp-thin woman stepped out. She was in her sixties, and had the air of an earlier generation of well-heeled Miami women." Miami Condolences, by Darice L. Moore

"I delivered yesterday's news in tomorrow's newspaper. At least that's what we mockingly called the Diario Las Américas. It was a morning newspaper printed in the afternoon, which meant the newspaper was predated and its contents outdated." Old News is Good News, by Valentin J. Prieto

Armando Bellmas brings us two new photographs, "Waiting," a compelling South Beach photo, and "Latin American Restaurant," our first taken in Westchester.

Two new stories are now live on Portland Stories.

From Charlene, we have the poetic Scenes from a Tri-Met Window, and from Reverend Phil, the drunkenly funny On Alcohol.

says: Miami Stories Update 11 Mar 02 // 4:16PM

"You have to hand it to my mom. On Friday nights, when she could have been clubbing with the under-30 disco set somewhere between the Grove and Turnberry, she chose instead to indulge her son's interests with a trip to the museum observatory." Heaven and Earth by Ted Myers

"At 23, I went to jail for allegedly shooting a pigeon." For the Birds by Robert Morrison

Milan Balinda, former photographer for The Miami Herald and El Nuevo Herald, brings us our first Coconut Grove photograph, "Grove Girls," and adds another gem, "Back," to our growing collection of beach photographs.

Martijn-Utrecht says: Back on track 10 Mar 02 // 11:31AM

A couple of months ago Utrecht Stories went offline. The hosting provider caused a lot of trouble, and it was time to move. The new host was not better, on the contrary. Due to the new Windows NT-server, Utrecht Stories couldn't get up anymore. Meanwhile, I finished my study Journalism and got a full-time job. That didn't help either. Now we're back. Thanks to Eend (Ivo, Robert Jan and Marrije).

Have a look at the new and improved Utrecht Stories!

The English section has been expanded and opens with two brand new stories: Rubber Lane and Modern Times.

Steve-Portland says: Two New Stories 6 Mar 02 // 1:19PM

A new contributor, Blake, has given us two wonderful stories, Places, and Journal Entry.

Springtime in Portland-- cold rainy, and the flowers are blooming.

Paul-Chicago says: Chicago Stories in the Tribune 5 Mar 02 // 11:20AM

Chicago Stories got a writeup in a Chicago Tribune article, marking our first instance in the non-web press. (sniff, sniff) As a bonus, City Stories was mentioned:

"...we've got literary aspirations as well as Big Shoulders. Check out http://chicagostories.org, the local component of the Citystories.com project, a collection of sites featuring the (virtual) inky drippings of residents of a seemingly random assemblage [sic] of 18 cities (ranging from Shreveport to Utrecht to Manila) on three continents.
