January 2002 News

Kent-Vancouver says: Santa on Cordova 31 Jan 02 // 5:26PM

It stopped snowing today in Vancouver. All the rain washed away the remaining powder; turning the streets into temporary pools of slush and grime. The snow was still thick yesterday though, when I wrote this story.

says: Miami Stories is live! 30 Jan 02 // 1:14PM

The site launched with three featured stories:

"Harry walked with a limp and scowled like a pirate, and he lived in a tree in Peacock Park." Harry, Pirate of Peacock Park, by Maud Newton

"The voice on the phone has a Caribbean lilt to it. It's a little staticky, and bracketed by odd silences, as if coming over a two-way radio." Cutler Ridge Taxi, by Maximus Clarke

"Our house in Coral Gables was just the sort of house you would imagine: every room piled with strange and wonderful books--French texts, Japanese theses--and with elegant plates of shells." Where the Elite Meet to Eat, by Walter Moore

Be sure to check out our Miami Photos page, where Ramon Estevanell's "Metrorail Motion" is our Photo of the Month.

Derek-SF says: new in sf stories 30 Jan 02 // 1:56AM

"A woman came in to talk into the phone to the obese female cop about her lousy ex-husband who'd sucked all the money out of a joint account. Thing is, they weren't quite divorced yet. Nobody happy ever steps foot in this room, I thought."

Laundry Day, a new SF Story.

Tom-Dublin says: snapshots and associations 29 Jan 02 // 2:36PM

"My Dublin is a collage of snapshots and vague associations, of chance encounters and cinematic scenes."

Lisa Ann Cassidy feels Short-Changed.

After an unexpected hiatus of sorts, I'm very pleased to say that Dublinstories is back.

I'm even more pleased to say that I'll be speaking on local Dublin station Near FM this coming Thursday. The topic is going to be Dublinstories, the whole Citystories thing and personal web stuff in general. It should be "a bit of craic" as we say over here.

Steve-Portland says: M. On the #75 28 Jan 02 // 10:04PM

Time has been very fluid over the past couple of years. Honestly, I can no longer accurately place just when it was. The passage of time, and particular moments that set down within the flow, are more emotional than temporal. I must have been a little disconnected again, not quite myself.

Talking to strangers while waiting for the bus isn't part of my character, in general -- let alone talking to a random She at whom I keep stealing glances.

M. On the #75, a new story from Portland Stories.

Lia-Manila says: Manila Stories is live! 9 Jan 02 // 3:38AM

The Manila Bank Arcade had the comic shop that got me started reading and collecting comic books. It was a Marvel comic, but I can’t remember if it was The Defenders, The Avengers or The Fantastic Four. Comic books cost P12.00 back then, P9.00 if they were coverless. I became a Filbar’s Comics Club member, and a Fantastic Four true-believer, wishing I had the powers of the Invisible Girl so I could sneak out more often.

Naughty Season, new at Manila Stories.

John-Shreveport says: christmas in roseland 5 Jan 02 // 7:26PM

We walked hand in hand through it all and just like the markers tacked up under each stop sign implored us to do, we stopped and smelled the roses.

Christmas in Roseland, new at Shreveport Stories.
