The City Stories Project

August 2001 News

John-Shreveport says: I didn't belong here 28 Aug 01 // 11:17PM

For an eternity we waited. They were taking the cancer out of her body. Removing this thing that was a black cloud over our lives for the past few months.

Anywhere but here, a new and very personal story about being somewhere I didn't belong, at Shreveport Stories.

Paul-Chicago says: It's right in this bag 25 Aug 01 // 10:35AM

"Hey, Mike, you might want to come down here... this guy just came by... and he just found this foot outside." oldgreedy's story of wildlife, feet, and an Uptown bookstore: Falcon's foot, new at Chicago Stories.

Fabrizio-Rome says: Ciao, welcome to Rome Stories 17 Aug 01 // 12:56AM

How many poets, writers, painters, have told stories about Rome, Italy? At Rome Stories we will tell the other stories, the tales of everyday life that few people knows except who lives here.

I'd like to thank for this great idea, citystories.com, because it's giving me the opportunity to learn so many things about real life out there, and to tell the world that my city is not only ancient monuments and dolce vita. We went live today with two stories: Via Condotti, about the other side of a glamorous July night in the world of italian fashion and 2001 yellowred night, a very intimate story in the background of the celebrations for the long awaited victory in the soccer championship. Hope you'll like them!

John-Shreveport says: Welcome to Shreveport Stories 15 Aug 01 // 9:16PM

Shreveport Stories went live to the world today and I would love to have you stop by and check it out.

Starting us off is a story about coming home:

"Once I saw the sign though, I knew we were there. We were back in Shreveport. Back where we belong. Home."

Check out homecoming, a new Shreveport Story by me, John Eklund.

Erik-Seattle says: The Seattle Stories Contest! 10 Aug 01 // 12:24AM

As of this minute, there's a contest at Seattle Stories. For the next 2 months, we'll be accepting entries to the first ever "Seattle Stories: Stories About Seattle Contest." All stories submitted to the site between now and October 9th at midnight (Pacific Time) will be eligible (fineprint: as long as the story is true, and the story is personal (meaning it has to in some way be important to the person telling it), and the story takes place in Seattle). Simple! Couldn't be easier. Details inside!

Karl-Philadelphia says: Welcome to Philly Stories 7 Aug 01 // 2:19PM

I'd just like to say thanks for starting the CityStories project. This is a wonderful opportunity to share something personal - how we feel about home.

I'd like to welcome you all to come by PhillyStories and take a gander. As time goes on, I'll come here and post new what's new by yours truly and our members.

Philadelphia is a much misunderstood city, with a great history, a promising future, and lots of drama. A city that I don't think I could ever move far from without feeling terribly homesick. And I hope our stories will help to show why.

To get us started we have A fight in Fishtown, about the Morris Arboretum Garden Railway, and a pic of the Love Statue by Nathan Gasser.

Erik-Seattle says: 2 New Seattle Stories 6 Aug 01 // 1:35AM

There are two new stories in Seattle, Sleepless in Seattle and Andrew & My Handicap, and they both have to do with our reactions to people outside our normal circles: the homeless and handicapped. It's a more complicated issue, I think, than it seems. Personally, I've never been able to come to terms with how I should treat people less fortunate (monetarily, or otherwise) than myself. I could give them everything I have, and we could essentially trade places, but is this an answer to the problem? What's your answer?

Martijn-Utrecht says: Waiting... 2 Aug 01 // 2:25PM

Waiting for the stories to come in our minds.

Waiting for the redesign.

Waiting for the translations, made by Wendy.

Waiting for some time to make pretty pictures of the medieval city.

I don't like to wait, but in Utrecht waiting is an art. In Utrecht's dialect 'Waaach maôr jochie' (Wait a minute, boy) is a well known sentence. That's why Utrecht has a wonderful Post Office.

Kent-Vancouver says: "...wherever it was we were going. " 2 Aug 01 // 4:09AM

Paul Jarvis got some unexpected bread on an easy friday; and with a good friend and a good camera, left the city and headed for the interior of British Columbia. This is the story of what he did, and some of what they saw: Things To Do When You Find Yourself With Three Hundred Bucks In Cash On A Friday (which, near as I can tell, now holds the record for longest ever City Story story title).

Raoul-Maastricht says: A quick introduction 1 Aug 01 // 1:27AM

The Netherland's oldest city, Maastricht sits at the bottom end of the thin finger of land which juts down between Belgium and Germany. Its history stretches back to 50 BC when the Romans set up camp on the bank of the River Meuse. Fortification walls still partly surround the city.

Maastricht is a bit different then the other cities in the Netherlands. Life is easier and more relaxed. We try to refelect this in our stories. By reading also the other citystories from the Netherland, you should get an idea how life can be the Netherlands.
